Crossed (Matched Series)

Synopsis:

Chasing down an uncertain future, Cassia makes her way to the Outer Provinces in pursuit of Ky—taken by Society to his certain death—only to find that he has escaped into the majestic, but treacherous, canyons.  On this wild frontier are glimmers of a different life . . . and the enthralling promise of rebellion. But even as Cassia sacrifices everything to reunite with Ky, ingenious surprises from Xander may change the game.  On the edge of Society, nothing is as expected, and crosses and double crosses make Cassia’s path more twisted than ever.

The Phoenix’s Perspective

In the second installment of the Matched series, the reader follows Cassia on her journey to find Ky in the Outer Provinces.  Their story is told through chapters with alternating points of view. This writing style allows the reader to understand what each character is feeling and hiding as they make this journey. Even more importantly, it gives the reader an inside look at Ky.  Even though he was an important and interesting aspect of Matched, the reader never really got to know him like we did Cassia.

As a result of the alternating narration, the book actually give the reader three different stories. The first story is that of Cassia – a girl that has never been without anything who goes on a journey that changes her at the core. She begins to see that not everyone is afforded the aspects of life that she has taken for granted in the past as normalcy.  The second story is that of Ky – a boy that has been a puzzle since the beginning of the first book who is always trying to hide parts of himself and his past from all those around him, even the girl he loves.

The final story is that of what occurs when Cassia and Ky find each other. We learn that there is so much more going on behind the scenes of life that the Society has hoped would never come to light. Cassia is beginning to see that they are in their own version of The Truman Show.  Nothing is as it seems – not even people, especially those closest to her who she thought she knew well.  There is a resistance out there fighting against the Society and its regulations.  Some have already been affected by the changes that the Rising is trying to put in place.  The question becomes should I join or not?

Would I add it to the library?

Yes!  Just like the first book in the series, Crossed, is written as Teen Fiction but reaches readers beyond that age level. It is a story about being controlled by something, even when you did not know you were being controlled, and finding a way to break free of those shackles. I cannot wait to read the third and final installment, Reached, to see what decisions these three characters have made.
