Dorothy Must Die

Synopsis:

I didn’t ask for any of this.

I didn’t ask to be some kind of hero.

But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado—taking you with it—you have no choice but to go along, you know?

Sure, I’ve read the books. I’ve seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little bluebirds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can’t be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There’s still a yellow brick road—but even that’s crumbling.

What happened? Dorothy.

They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.

My name is Amy Gumm—and I’m the other girl from Kansas.

I’ve been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked.

I’ve been trained to fight.

And I have a mission.

The Phoenix’s Perspective

From the minute I read the book description, I knew that Dorothy Must Die was a book I needed to read. The idea of a not-so-fairy-tale fairy tale sounded great —- somewhere right down the alley near the Brothers Grimm.

I could not put the book down! I found myself saying “I’ll put it down right after this chapter….ok, after this one I swear!” Using the age-old fairy tale was simply the beginning, Paige’s talented writing took the world of Oz to a completely different level.  She changed just the right amount of material to make the story fresh, new and interesting while not deviating so much that it would be off-putting.

In the fairy tale, Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Lion each receives a parting gift for the part they played in saving the day. What happens to someone when they are given a gift full of power? Dorothy Must Die really opens up the door to that question. Each of our misfits has gotten a face-lift – a new outside to match the darkness that has taken over their insides.  It seems that embracing their gifts had some after-effects — the biggest of which is the desire for more and more power/magic.

By combining all the new “upgrades” with the fresh point-of-view of a new character, Paige really came up with a winner. I am excited to follow Amy on her journey through Oz and I hope to answer some questions along the way — Why did Dorothy return? How did she seize power?  Who brought Amy to Oz?  How can Amy defeat Dorothy?  What will happen if/when she does defeat her?

Would I add it to the library?

Yes! I was captivated and am so sad that the next full length book is not to be published until 2015. Until then, I shall have to be satisfied with the currently published novella, No Place Like Oz, and a second novella that is set to be published later this year.
