Nil on Fire (Nil Series)

Synopsis:

Despite Rives and Skye’s attempt to destroy Nil, the island remains. And back in this world, Nil won’t let Skye go. Haunted by a darkness she can’t ignore, Skye wrestles with Nil nightmares that worsen by the day and threaten to tear her apart. As the island grows in power, Skye fights to keep her mind intact. Soon Skye realizes that to break free of Nil, she must end Nil’s vicious cycle once and for all–and she can’t do it alone.

Who are Nil’s new arrivals? Who will return to the island? And who will survive in the end? In this thrilling final installment of the Nil series, the stakes have never been higher.

Losing isn’t an option, but winning will cost Skye everything.

The Phoenix’s Perspective

After the first book, Nil, I wasn’t even sure how Matson was going to continue the series considering that it was centered solely on two main characters who made it out.  Then reading Nil Unlocked, I was amazed at how she was able to recreate a different storyline while dealing with a second set of characters who we had already met in the first book who were still on the island.  At the end of the second book, I was left amazed by the storyline, but yet confused because I knew there was a third book coming.  What was she going to do now?  How could this story seriously continue?

OMG!  Not only did Matson find a way, but she completely swept the rug out from under me. The first two books were told in the alternating points of view of the main characters.  I don’t think I even thought that Nil, the island itself, could be considered as a character.  Now, not only were we, the readers, seeing the journey through the eyes of the main characters we had come to know, but we were also being exposed to the point of view of the actual island. What possessed Nil to exist?  Why did the kids only have a year?  What did the island need from them?  Why was it so different now then what it had been when it was originally found?

Sometimes the final installment in a trilogy can feel rushed because the author has to wrap everything up before the last page comes.  Nil on Fire did not feel that way at all.  Everything did get wrapped up, but not in a cheesy “here you go” way.  There were reasons for everything and we learned each one.  Even the newly introduced characters were given a functional introduction and ending.  It didn’t feel like – oh hey, here are some new people and oh yeah here’s how everything ended for them.  They were actually weaved into the story of Nil right alongside of the original characters.

In my opinion, Matson’s Nil series was absolutely amazing.  I hope that she begins a new series because I will be ready to buy it.

Would I add it to the library?

Yes! I am very excited to have found that next month Nil Remembered will be published as an ebook. Matson has created a Nil journal of some sort.
