The Fall of Five (Lorien Legacies)

Synopsis:

John Smith—Number Four—thought that things would change once the Garde found one another. They would stop running. They would fight the Mogadorians. And they would win.

But he was wrong. After facing off with the Mogadorian ruler and almost being annihilated, the Garde know they are drastically unprepared and hopelessly outgunned. Now they’re hiding out in Nine’s Chicago penthouse, trying to figure out their next move.

The six of them are powerful, but they’re not strong enough yet to take on an entire army—even with the return of an old ally. To defeat their enemy, the Garde must master their Legacies and learn to work together as a team. More important, they’ll have to discover the truth about the Elders and their plan for the Loric survivors.

And when the Garde receive a sign from Number Five—a crop circle in the shape of a Loric symbol—they know they are so close to being reunited. But could it be a trap? Time is running out, and the only thing they know for certain is that they have to get to Five before it’s too late.

The Garde may have lost battles, but they will not lose this war.

Lorien will rise again.

The Phoenix’s Perspective

We begin where we left off – Four (John Smith), Nine, Six, Eight, Marina (Seven), Ella and Sarah are at Nine’s loft trying to figure out what to do next and how to find Five, the only other remaining Loric Garde.

As the story progresses, we find ourselves with a trio of new/old faces. Rescuing Five, John is reunited with Sam and his father, Malcolm. Our new additions to the hero group are met with reservations.

  • Five seems a little odd and timid. He doesn’t really know how to fight and he refers to Sam, Malcolm and Sarah as “the human helpers.”
  • Sam has spent time in the clutches of the Mogadorians and we are unsure of how much he has suffered and what the lasting effects of that torture would be.
  • Malcolm was trapped by Mogadorians for what seemed like a lifetime and seemed to have a ton of gaps in his memory.

Can anyone of them really be trusted? In his new role as group leader, John tries to get everyone’s emotions under control and have the group work together as a team. As if that isn’t a difficult task in and of itself, the group starts to face trouble from within.  Ella has begun having nightmares about a future where the Loric Garde is wiped out and Sekratus is using her in his devious plans.  At the same time, Sam has found out that someone from within the group has sent the Mogadorians information about their current location and descriptions of all the legacies and Loric tools that are currently at the Garde’s disposal.

In the midst of all this, the Garde splits up. One half (Six, Nine, Five, Eight and Marina) goes to find Five’s chest that was buried in a secret location. The other half (John, Ella, Sam, Malcolm and Sarah) remain at the Chicago loft due to unforeseen complications that have incapacitated John and Ella.  Both halves are then attacked by Mogadorians!

The final scenes reveal the traitor – the true allies – new allies – and more. Just as before, Pittacus Lore manages to trap us in for a wild ride and never lets us go. Even as we read the final sentences, we find ourselves sucked in.  All the while, ignoring the fact that the story ends in but a few seconds.
