Nil Unlocked (Nil Series)

On the island of Nil, the rules are set. You have exactly 365 days to escape—or you die. Rives is now the undisputed Leader of Nil City, but keeping the City united is tougher than ever.

Raiders have grown bolder, supplies are dwindling, and non-human inhabitants have taken a turn toward the deadly. New arrivals cause rifts within the City, putting the Search system at risk, and calling everything Rives knows into question. Desperate for answers, he teams up with the only other person searching for them: Skye, a new arrival with a mysterious past of her own. Soon the duo finds themselves locked in a desperate race to save all the residents of Nil—and possibly destroy the island forever. But at what cost? And who will pay the price?

Nil Unlocked by Lynne Matson is the stunning, action packed second book in the Nil series, a thrilling, island adventure and mystery story.

The Phoenix’s Perspective

Throughout the entire first book, I was on the edge of my seat, so I could only hope that Nil Unlocked would be the same. It was AWESOME! The biggest difference between the books is that we actually get to learn more about Nil and how it works – more than just you have 365 days to get off the island.

What made it so interesting to me is what held the series (and continues in Nil on Fire) together. Usually a trilogy (or any size series) circles around a specific character(s) and follows what they do throughout a certain situation. Although I wasn’t sure how we were to follow Thad and Charley, I assumed we would since they were the main characters in the first book.  Well, you know what they say about assuming!  Starting Nil Unlocked opened my eyes to the true main character of the trilogy – the island, Nil.  Now, I am sure some of you reading this may think – “duh lady! Read the titles!”  But just like the cover of a book, the title is not always a literal interpretation of the book and its contents.

Nevertheless, this island is more than just a background – it is the essence of the book. The first book was spent completely on the island. In Nil Unlocked, we spend part of the time getting to know a new main character, Skye.  Even though Skye is not even on the island, she has been connected to it since before she even knew it existed.  Her uncle Scott spent time on Nil and wrote a journal about it.  Her father has been searching for the island ever since Scott returned to try and understand what changed his brother.  Scott may have made it off the island, but Nil never truly released him.  Using her uncle’s journal, Skye opens up a new level of understanding about the island, but knowledge can be dangerous.  In Skye’s case, it gives her a first class ticket to Nil.  She may not be an ordinary newbie, but she is still stuck in the same situation as everyone there.

Rives, Nil City’s current leader, is struggling to fill the role left to him by Thad. When he meets Skye, not only is their personal connection instantaneous but they also find that they can help each other lead the city and find a way to end Nil for good. Even working together, Rives and Skye find that they need more help.  They find it in the most unlikely of sources – Paulo, an islander who shares as much as he can, considering that his people have been using the island as a ritual for a coming of age experience.

I cannot continue without giving away the entire story – yes, there is still more aside from everything I have already said! I will say that Matson continues to create an amazing story, weaving everyone’s story throughout the book without making anything feel forced. I was left just as astonished at the end of this book as I was at the end of the first one.  I definitely think this is a series that needs to be read by everyone!

Would I add it to the library?

Yes!  I cannot wait for Nil on Fire to come out!
